This is an interesting theory I came across…that all constitutions experience an excess of Vata in these Kali Yuga times. To understand what is meant by an ayurvedic constitution, here is a brief post.
Some people say it is Pitta that increases nowadays, being based in fire (as we see from predominance of aggression etc…but also because this is an Industrial society based on the power of fire).
But I think considering Vata to be increased may be closer to the mark. Vata is of the elements Air and Ether, and as we have become post-industrial those wavelengths in the ether is what is more predominant. We are surrounded by and immersed in Vata-type currents. Just my own point of view.
Vata is good for creativity, inspiration, lightness, quickness. Adventurous spirits and excitement and enthusiasm are part of Vata. We all have and need Vata. An imbalance is where we have excess anxiety, insomnia, ambition and drive to ”become something”, a perpetually split and hyperactive mind that is out of whack, lack of concentration. I would say this is characteristic of this age. Racing minds that multi-task and spaciness where we cannot focus on the present moment are signs of Vata out of balance. The children of this age, for example, who are hooked on games and digital life, are cultivating excess Vata.
The great news is that Vata can be balanced quite nicely.
A regular, disciplined life that takes the pace down a notch or two is called for. On waking, do gentle exercise and sit for meditation. It does not have to be long, just simple awareness of the stillness of the body and the breath moving therein.
Teas made with fresh ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, or the inclusion of these spices generally in the diet, calm excess Vata, because they are warming. Vata is cold and light. Anything warming and soothing – even warm baths – pacifies Vata. Keep the body warm. Wear clothing that feels smooth and comfortable on the skin, and that is not restrictive.
Spending time walking slowly and with awareness in nature is very soothing for excess Vata.
Strange things that soothe Vata include wearing woolly socks in bed, having heavy blankets, keeping the volume on what you are listening to at a moderate level, and not moving about like a headless chicken all the time.
