What will we be like post-awakening? How do you conceive that?
It is worth considering where we think we are going.
First the seeking, the endless yearning, then kaboom, but then what? Visualise it for a moment. Really.
Will we still eat too much chocolate cake when the opportunity arises, gossip, masturbate, stumble home after too much saké and tolerantly disdain the parade of worldly ninnies that march before us?
Or will we become as po-faced saints, quenching the fire of every thought to maintain our dis-associative trance while playing games of cosmic marbles with our shiny siddhis?
Or will we be just as we are? Only fully. Fully Fully.
Answers on the back of an envelope please….
In the meantime here is a pre-awakening practice. A training session. And guess what…. it’s tricky.
If the pre-match warm-ups are so tricky, what is playing in the big league like?
Metta ~ Unconditional Loving Kindness.
Also known as Maitri.
This is a boundless, generous, warm-hearted wish that EVERYONE may be happy, that all beings may be liberated. Not just me. Not just my favourite pets. And not just kindness in some distant, detached, hopeful sort of way that does not upset our apple cart. But loving kindness in a way that moves us beyond our personal meanness and stretches us to an active interest in others welfare. In the Tibetan version the practitioner is even encouraged to breathe in the sufferings of others to alleviate the others pain, (much like a crucifixion in a way.)
We start with our self. There will be no loving kindness for others if we do not feel loving kindness for ourselves. And we stay with that, until stabilised.
And then, bit by bit, maintaining loving kindness for our tolerance, we extend metta to all the other beings in the Universe…because playing with shiny marbles all alone in Heaven would be very boring, wouldn’t it.
“May all beings be happy, content and fulfilled,
May all beings be healed and whole,
May all beings have whatever they want and need
May all beings be protected from harm and free from fear,
May all beings be awakened, liberated and free,
May there be peace on earth and the entire universe.”
